Reasons for TRO implementation

The benefit labels used in The Traffic Suite summarise the reasons stated in Section 3 of The Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as to why a Traffic Regulation Order might be implemented

Improve safety

To avoid danger to persons or other traffic using the road or any other road, or to prevent the likelihood of such danger arising

Improve air quality

For any of the purposes specified in paragraphs (a) to (c) of subsection (1) of section 87 of the Environment Act 1995, specifically related to air quality

Enable multi-use access

To facilitate the passage on the road or any other road for any class of traffic, including pedestrians, allowing for multi-use access

Prevent traffic

To prevent the use of the road by vehicular traffic that is unsuitable considering the existing character of the road or adjoining property.

Preserve character

To preserve the character of the road, especially if it is particularly suitable for use by persons on horseback or on foot

Preserve amenities

To preserve or improve the amenities of the area through which the road runs

Prevent damage

To prevent damage to the road or any building located on or near the road
