Mapper, Engagement, Streets

The ability to rapidly model and compare different scenarios has proven invaluable. Looking at changes in plans that have been drafted on the same software has proven easier for both internal and external consultees to comprehend.

Overview

In the historic and bustling county of Cambridgeshire, the highways team faced a common public sector challenge: delivering crucial traffic regulation orders efficiently with limited resources. The traditional reliance on a small pool of AutoCAD specialists was slowing down the process of consulting on and implementing vital new schemes.

The Policy & Regulation team would often have initial ideas for scheme changes, but visualising and sharing these proposals required waiting for a trained AutoCAD user to become available. This not only delayed the initial drafting phase but also made it cumbersome to present alternative options or make swift amendments based on early feedback.

There are a limited number of AutoCAD licences available and there is also a variance in skill level across AutoCAD users. Having the ability to draft plans on Mapper overcomes these issues providing a quick method of drafting initial plans, which can be formally drawn up using AutoCAD once approved.

Why AppyWay?

The introduction of AppyWay’s Mapper, and specifically its draft map schedule feature, has been a game-changer for the council. This powerful yet intuitive tool allows engineers to take control of the initial mapping process directly, without needing to be CAD experts.

  • proposals can be plotted quickly and easily within the Mapper interface
  • a draft can be instantly exported as a clear and professional draft map schedule

From my experience, I’ve been able to quickly plot the current proposals and export a draft map schedule, then amend the restrictions to show alternative proposals or suggested improvements and export an updated draft map schedule for comparison.

From Roadblock to Rapid Prototyping

This streamlined process not only saves valuable officer time but also enhances the quality of consultations. Presenting clear, consistent, and easily comparable visual data helps stakeholders, from internal teams to external partners and the public, to better understand the proposed changes.

Furthermore, the increased exposure to the consistent format of Mapper’s map schedules is having a positive knock-on effect. As consultees become more familiar with the clear and standardised layout, they find it easier to read and interpret the plans, leading to more productive consultations and fewer basic queries. This is particularly beneficial when residents approach their local county councillors, who can now engage in more informed discussions.
